I received my regular Foundation for Excellence in Education Newsletter as usual. It’s a way to monitor this progressive organization founded by none other than former Florida Governor Jeb Bush! Up to this point, they were very discreet in their messaging. But they slipped up this time and finally, as evil always does, revealed their true colors! The title of the newsletter read “Debunking the Common Core Myth”. Needless to say my blood boiled. So I decided to address Common Core in this article. It is an abomination for someone of the caliber of Mr Bush to be spouting such propaganda! So we will set the record straight as to the real facts about Common Core, its origins, who is really driving it and why it is being forced upon us!

First of all, the reason it is so important to deal with Common Core is because the average American has the fundamental premise that people, even those in high places are basically good. Average folks invest faith in them, particularly if they have a conservative title, and especially when they bring up well known experts to back up the premises presented to them. Why question it? It must be the right thing. The average mom and dad, working hard to raise their children and wanting the best for them, are very open to suggestions, ideas and models that will help the future of their children. Parents want something better than what they had, especially if their circumstances are not of the favorable kind.

These people in high places, people like Jeb Bush, Barack Obama and other global elites, take advantage of people’s goodness and flat out lie about the what’s and the why’s. This whole idea of their interest being implementing high academic standards is absolute nonsense. Over the last 100 years education in the United States has been subverted and in the last 40 years, the public education system has been a disaster. Members of the Weather Underground became tenure professors in many of the elite Universities, Bill Ayres, the domestic terrorist and founder of the Weather Underground, was in charge of the content of the national curriculum in the United States for 10 years up to 2010. And as John Dewey put it: “the purpose of public education is to socialize the child and make them a willing ward of the State”. This is a statement made by a man who was a professed Socialist. He is credited as being the Father of Public Education.

Let’s lay some groundwork before we get into Common Core to put things in perspective. In 1933, a man by the name of William Z. Foster, Chairman of the National Communist Party (USA) and a candidate for US President at that time, wrote a book called “Toward Soviet America”. By the way he was also co-founder of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union). On page 316 of his book he wrote regarding education: “Among the elementary measures the American Soviet government will adopt to further the cultural revolution are the following: the schools, colleges and universities will be coordinated under the National Department of Education and its state and local branches. The studies will be revolutionized, being cleansed of religious, patriotic and other features of the bourgeois ideology. The students will be taught on the basis of Marxian dialectical materialism, internationalism and the general ethics of the New Socialist Society. Present obsolete methods of teaching will be superseded by a scientific pedagogy”. He also writes on that same page: “The Churches will remain free to continue their services, but the special tax and other privileges will be liquidated. Their buildings will revert to the State. Religious schools will be abolished and organized religious training for minors prohibited. Freedom will be established for anti-religious propaganda”. As a note, the US Department of Education was recreated as a cabinet level department in 1979 by the Department of Education Organization Act which was signed into law by President Jimmy Carter. It first existed in 1867 but was quickly demoted in 1868 and went through different changes throughout its history.

William Z Foster also wrote: “the whole basis and organization of Capitalist science will be revolutionized. Science will become materialistic, hence truly scientific; God will be banished from the laboratories as well as from the schools. Science will be thoroughly organized and will work according to plan; instead of the present individualistic hit-or-miss scientific dabbling, there will be a great organization of science, backed by the full power of the Government.”

Interestingly enough he also wrote the following: “One of the basic concerns of the worker’ government will be, naturally, the conservation of the health of the masses. To this end a national Department of Health will be set up, with the necessary local and State sub-divisions. A free medical service, based upon the most scientific principles, will be established. They will give mass instruction in diet, physical culture, etc. A last end will be put to capitalist medical quackery and the adulteration of food.” He also said: “In making the cultural revolution in the United States, the workers and farmers, facing the same general problems as the Russians, will solve them along similar lines.” The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare was established April 11, 1953 and was renamed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in 1979, when its education functions were transferred to the newly created United States Department of Education!

The Foundation for Excellence in Education, one of the main promoters of Common Core, promotes themselves as “reformers”. One of those “reformers” listed on their website is Andres Alonso, who is currently CEO of the Baltimore City public schools. He is a graduate of Columbia University, the same university Frances Fox Piven is Tenure professor and where Al Gore was professor. He also received a J.D. and a doctorate in Education from Harvard University. An article from the Baltimore Sun exposes his disregard for fiscal responsibility with regard to taxpayer money. According to the Sun, “among those transactions were a $450-per-person retreat at the downtown Hilton during which 16 employees of the Information Technology Department were also treated to a $500 dinner at Brazilian steakhouse Fogo de Chao; and a $264 lunch for students at Hooter’s. A review of credit card transactions and receipts by The Sun found that the bulk of the expenditures — about $300,000, generated by 16 central office employees — were made under a new procurement-card program that has operated with virtually no controls or oversight since it began in January 2011. Card statements show that many of the expenditures violated the school system’s own protocols and restrictions for use of the cards, such as a prohibition on using them for travel or to buy gifts for employees.” Also, in the Summer of 2012, the Mayor of Baltimore, Andres Alonso, The Family League of Baltimore, Inc. and other non-profits to create Baltimore City Super Summer. In 2010, The Family League of Baltimore, Inc. was one of the top 75 grant recipients of the Socialist Godfather George Soros, according to America’s Survival, Inc.’s sorosfiles.com. America’s Survival, Inc’s president is Cliff Kincaid, a veteran conservative journalist/speaker. Writer/contributors for ASI are Tina Trent and Trevor Loudon.

Another “reformer” on the Foundation for Excellence in Education is Byron Auguste. He is one of the original founders of the “Hope Street Group” and Chairman of its Board of Directors. On his board of advisors is John Podesta, Chair and Counselor for Center for American Progress, a far left think tank funded by Socialist George Soros.

Yet another “reformer” is Diana Aviv, President and CEO of the Independent Sector. The Chair of the Independent Sector is Steve B. Heintz, president of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund (RBF). The RBF’s mission statement states that it “advances social change that contributes to a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world”. According to RBF, they work in 3 pivotal places: New York City, Western Balkans and Southern China. Also, the Independent Sector receives funding from the Tides Foundation, a major George Soros organization.

Now that we have laid some basic ground work (there is so much more but would take a book to cover it all), lets get into some of the details about Common Core and how they are accomplishing their goals.

Common Core is an initiative, NOT by States, but by a leftist education reform organization named Achieve, Inc. aimed at “centralizing” academic standards. The process was initiated by the National Governors Association’s Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers. They then delegated the drafting of the standards to Achieve, Inc. who was created by the NGA. This process was managed by six state Governors who were chosen by a non-democratic process. The oversight also included the CEOs of Battelle Memorial Institute, Intel Corporation, Prudential Financial, Achieve, Inc. and State Farm Insurance.

Achieve, Inc, is the primary foundation driving Common Core. Their slogan reads: “All students should graduate from high school ready for college, careers and citizenship”

This was all financed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Boeing Company, Carnegie Corporation of New York, the GE Foundation, IBM Corporation, Intel Foundation, Nationwide, the Prudential Foundation, the State Farm Insurance Company, Washington Mutual Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewett Foundation.

Their mission, from their own website statement says “The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.”

The rabbit hole goes much, much deeper. The ideas and people driving Common Core are grounded in the ideas of the Frankfurt School, William Z. Foster and Antonio Gramsci, just to name a few. Btw, one exercise devised by Common Core promoters features the Gettysburg Address as a word cloud. Yes, a word cloud. Teachers use the jumble of letters, devoid of historical context and truths, to help students chart, decode and “deconstruct” Lincoln’s speech. Deconstructionism, of course, is the faddish left-wing school of thought popularized by French philosopher Jacques Derrida in the 1970s.

Why should we be concerned? for starters, Abraham Lincoln said “The philosophy of the classroom today will be the philosophy of government tomorrow.”

Here is the real issue and bottom line regarding Common Core: What gives these businesses, educational and political elites the right to dictate standards for “our” children? Is it not parents responsibility to do that? What gives them the right to dictate standards for our children and then enshrine them into law to force us to abide by them? Is this not tyranny of the educated elite? Just because they are powerful and educated, does that give them the right? Just because they have experts validating their models… does that give them the right? Who do they think they are? We can argue tit for tat on what in Common Core is and is not (the left is setting us up framing the debate to make us look like we do not care about education), or what standards we will negotiate away to arrive at a compromise with the left but… why are we here in the first place? This is a trick to get us debating the details in order to get our eyes off the fact that they have decided they know better than parents on what is best for the child. This is evil. The left can take their ideas and go home with them; and we all as parents should show them the door and reject this abominable tyranny.

Let me ask you something Mr Bush: do you really think no one in heaven is watching? Karl Marx wrote in the Communist Manifesto “Do you charge us with wanting to stop the exploitation of children by their parents? To this crime we plead guilty. But, you say, we destroy the most hallowed of relations, when we replace home education by social.” How has Marxism played out in Russia, Cuba, Venezuela? you are a Statesman Mr Bush. You know that!! Karl Marx also said “The education of all children, from the moment that they can get along without a mother’s care, shall be in state institutions at state expense.” and again he said, “People would need a long period of re-education under socialism to condition them away from the selfish orientation produced by Capitalism and toward the wider perspective necessary to create Communism.”

Remember what Jesus said: “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe to stumble, it would be better for him if, with a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea.”

Readers, how long are we going to stay naive? What kind of consequences do you think we will endure if we pretend there is no evil being perpetrated on our children? Are you willing to take that risk? The Germans did with Hitler. The Russians did with Lenin. The Cubans did with Castro. Should we only rely on hindsight being 20/20? Edmund Burke said: “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.” Thomas Jefferson said “Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories. And to render them safe, their minds must be improved to a certain degree.”

WE THE PEOPLE, how about having some “FORESIGHT” and let’s stop Common Core dead in its tracks!
